Parrish Art Museum Spring Fling 2013 PHOTOS!

This past Saturday, April 27th, the Parrish Art Museum held its annual Spring Fling at its new Water Mill location.  The event was sold out with everyone, including us, looking for an excuse to check out the new facility!  With it’s new 34,000 square foot Herzog & de Meuron-designed building and 12,000 square feet of actual exhibition space, the unity of landscape and architecture lent itself so beautifully to this festive affair we all look forward to every Spring.  Guests mingled and marveled at the new surroundings and even checked out the new cafe.  Live entertainment from Todd Barrie Music encouraged dancing and fun!  We will definitely be returning to the museum soon as patrons to check out both the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions.  The Parrish Art Spring Fling gave us a little hint that summer in the Hamptons is just around the corner and we can’t wait!

Benefit to Save Lives in the Fight against Meningitis, a Vaccine-Preventable Disease

Honored Samantha & Kyle Busch, NASCAR Champion, Mass. State Senator Jack Hart,

Cindy Krejny and William Schaffner, MD.    Richard Thomas & Rita Cosby Emcee

The annual National Meningitis Association (NMA) Give Kids a Shot Gala was once again an emotion filled evening but a stellar success in aiding the fight against meningitis, a potentially vaccine preventable disease. Held in the elegant ballrooms of the historic New York Athletic Club with phenomenal views of Central Park as a backdrop, hundreds of New York’s movers and shakers turned out to support the cause and also to congratulate meningitis survivor & Para Olympic Gold Medalist  Nick Springer, an Honorary Chair along with Ambassador & Mrs. John L. Loeb, Jr.

Guests mingled over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while poring over the dazzling array of Silent Auction gifts from breathtaking jewels to one of a kind fashions and even a commemorative bottle of Medea Vodka with an LED message from Richard Thomas shimmering across the bottle like a Broadway marquee. NMA President Lynn Bozof and Committee Co-Chairs Sara Herbert Galloway, Gary Springer and Lenore Cooney swirled through the room greeting friends and introducing this year’s honorees: Dr. William Schaffner, Health Achievement Award Honoree for his advocacy of the role of vaccines in protecting individual and community health; Cindy Krejny, Moms on Meningitis Outstanding Service Award for her tireless efforts to educate the public about meningitis and her work with Ohio lawmakers to mandate vaccination for college students;  Massachusetts State Senator Jack Hart who pushed the passage of a mandatory vaccination in his home state, with the Nancy Ford Springer Inspiration Award  and NASCAR record breaking winner Kyle Busch & his wife Samantha with the Community Leadership Award for the work of their Kyle Busch Foundation in support of programs that aid disabled and disadvantaged children around the country.

President Lynn Bozof gave moving testimony to the reason everyone was gathered – to prevent this dreaded disease by having pre-teens and teens vaccinated.

Well known author and broadcast journalist Rita Cosby, filling in for longtime NMA host actor Richard Thomas, who was filming, kept the evening running smoothly.  Unexpectedly, Thomas showed up on a break from shooting Law & Order SVU to personally congratulate the honorees and thank all the supporters.

The National Meningitis Association (NMA) is a nonprofit organization founded by parents of children who have died or live with long-term effects from meningococcal disease, also called bacterial meningitis. NMA works to protect families from the potentially devastating effects of meningococcal disease by educating the public, medical professionals and others about the disease and its prevention. The NMA network also provides critical emotional support for families who have been affected by meningococcal disease. Additionally, NMA raises awareness of other preventable diseases and recommended vaccines across the lifespan.

During the 1990’s, there was a significant increase in the number of adolescents and young adults killed or disabled by meningococcal meningitis; young people who were seemingly healthy, vibrant and often athletic. Most of the families were unaware of a vaccine that could have saved their children’s lives or anguish. The National Meningitis Association (NMA), a non-profit organization, was formed in 2002 by parents whose children were killed or disabled by meningitis. Since then, NMA has created educational programs that reach millions of people each year with information about available immunizations and disease symptoms and thoughtful, comprehensive support programs for families devastated by the ravages of the disease.

Long Island Pulse Magazine’s April Cover Party at Jellyfish – PHOTOS!

On Thursday, April 11th, Society-In-Focus we headed over to Jellyfish Restaurant in Centerport, NY to photograph Long Island Pulse Magazine‘s April Cover Party.  The venue was a lovely seafood restaurant right on the water and the weather finally cooperated enough for guests to enjoy the outdoor deck a little bit.  Inside, everyone was well-fed with tons of seafood hors d’oeurves, fresh sushi, and tables full of meats, cheeses, and olives!  Downstairs in the speakeasy, we were entertained by a jazz trio and the aquarium room full of live fish, seahorses, and even an eel!  Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next month!

Long Island Pulse Magazine’s April Cover Party at Jellyfish- Society-In-Focus to Photograph!

invite_page_apr13

April showers bring May flowers… in true form, Mother Nature played a little April Fool’s joke on us here in NY today.  The day started of close to 60 degrees and dry.  It really felt like Spring was finally here.  But then came the April showers and with it colder temperatures.  It’s hovering around the low 40’s as I type this, but I’m still picturing the May flowers that will hopefully be in bloom soon!  And with a new month comes a new Long Island Pulse Magazine‘s cover party!

Last month’s Soiree for the Senses was a fabulous artsy event.  This time we’re headed to a Centerport restaurant called Jellyfish for more fun and food!  We can’t wait to see what (or who) the surprise performance is this time!
