Social Life Magazine’s Halloween Bash at Skylight Soho!

On Saturday, October 29, 2011, Society-In-Focus attended Social Life Magazine’s Halloween Bash at Skylight Soho in Manhattan!

The weather was terrible all day long with a mix of pouring rain, sleet, and snow, but we managed to throw some costumes together and make our way into the city to shoot this fun event.  When we arrived outside the West Soho club, a long line of shivering guests under umbrellas was waiting outside to be let into the party.  We were told to knock on a side door to be let into the press check-in area.  After fighting our way through the crowd, we managed to get in and get our orange leopard print wristbands.  The coat check line was ridiculously long, but luckily we found somewhere else to stash our coats and equipment.

We walked into a huge 15,000 square foot space with 20 foot ceilings and concrete floors.  The room was lit up with red lights and ghoulish images were being projected on the walls.  DJ Marvilous and Tyger Lilly were spinning the beats and hundreds of guests were dancing and having a great time.  Full open bars were set up around the room to justify the event’s ticket fee and a VIP room was set up on one end of the room where table service was being provided.

We saw so many awesome costumes this year!  Everything from the traditional angel and devil, Catwoman, flappers, fairy tale characters, and can-can girls to the super creative like a disco ball, “the other 99%”, Double Dare contestants, Zipperface, Boardwalk Empire’s Richard Harrow, and a plastic surgery patient gone bad!  People seemed to love posing for pictures with their friends and we were able to give out so many business cards!  Everyone was drinking and dancing and some games of limbo even broke out!

The party raged on until 2am at which time everyone formed another crazy long line for the coat check.  We’re not really sure what was going on with the retrieval of the coats, but it seemed like the crowd was getting pretty upset about something.  We got out of there just in time apparently because the cops showed up after we got back to the car!

Anyway, despite that little hiccup, this was definitely one of the coolest events we’ve shot this year.  It was fun to dress up and spend Halloween in NYC!  Were you at the party with us?  Check out all the photos here and drop us some comments!

Golden Starfish Awards Ceremony (and Results!) – HIFF 2011

James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller

On Sunday, October 16th, we headed back out to East Hampton for some more HIFF excitement.  Besides numerous film screenings, several events were scheduled throughout the day including a conversation with Rufus Wainwright (moderated by Mike Albo), a live art event with land artist Jim Denevan on Georgica Beach, and the Golden Starfish Awards at Guild Hall.  We photographed the red carpet arrivals at the awards ceremony which was attended by many of the filmmakers, breakthrough actors, and also James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Miller, stars of The Artist which won the Narrative Audience Award.  James looked quite dapper in a dark suit and Penelope was definitely the talk of the red carpet in a stunning green and aqua dress which looked great on her!

2011 Hamptons International Film Festival is Underway!

It’s been such a busy weekend and it’s not even over yet!  The 2011 HIFF kicked off on Thursday with a few screenings including the official opening night film: Jeff, Who Lives at Home starring Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon, Judy Greer, and Rae Dawn Chon. Friday was a lot busier with many more film screenings including spotlight film Butter starring Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell, Yara Shahidi, Hugh Jackman, and Alicia Silverstone as well as feature narrative Coriolanus, Ralph Feinnes’ directorial debut in which he stars along with Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave, and James Nesbitt. The weather Friday night wasn’t that great though. It was damp and drizzly but there were still a bunch of people out and about.

Saturday brought better weather and what seemed like bigger crowds out to the Hamptons. It was windy but sunny and a nice day to be outside for all the events going on before the screenings. A few special 90 minute “conversation” events were held yesterday including a conversation with Matthew Broderick moderated by Alec Baldwin, a conversation with Susan Sarandon moderated by Bob Balaban, and a conversation with Harry Belafonte moderated by Dick Cavett.

We attended the red carpet event at the Chairman’s Reception held at a private residence in East Hampton.  Several filmmakers, critics, actors, and other celebrities were spotted including one of the Olsen twins who did NOT want to pose for a photo!  We did get to see Susan Sarandon, Matthew Broderick, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, and Christie Brinkley among others though! We were also fortunate enough to be up close and personal while Gina Giordan with In the Mixx interviewed Mr. Broderick. Being that he is the star of my all time favorite movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, it was really cool to listen to him talk about the fact that this year is the movie’s 25th anniversary!

We also attended the FEED cocktail reception at Nick + Toni’s in East Hampton. The party was held to celebrate Lauren Bush Lauren for the FEEDorganization as well as the film festival. The party attracted a lot more guests than were expected, and the lounge soon filled up over capacity. The result? The press got sent outside. We were able to stay long enough to snap a couple of photos of Penelope Ann Miller, Lauren Bush Lauren and Sharon Bush, and we got to say hello to Ann Liguori and Scott Vallary who were also in attendance.

In addition to all the events we shot yesterday, we also took in a screening of Like Crazy at Guild Hall in East Hampton.  The screening was the East Coast premier and was introduced by director Drake Doremus and breakthrough actor, Anton Yelchin.  The film stars Anton Yelchin as Jacob, and American student, and Felicity Jones as Anna a student from the UK, who fall in love at college in LA.  Visa troubles get in the way of the two young lovers being together and they need to learn to live and love apart from one another.  The film was artistically shot with a handheld camera giving it a realistic feel, but the actors didn’t seem to have the chemistry to be a believable couple.  Parts of the movie were touching, but overall I think it fell flat.  Anna’s parents, played by Alex Kingston and Oliver Muirhead, didn’t have a huge role in the movie, but I felt like they brought good, well-seasoned acting experience to the film.

We also got our screening copy of Revenge of the Electric Car, narrated by Tim Robbins yesterday, so we should have a review on that soon!

Stay tuned for more HIFF updates and photos!

3rd Annual IGHL Luncheon & Fashion Fling

Last weekend we had the privilege of being invited by WFAN’s Ann Liguori to be guests at the 3rd annual Independent Group Home Living (IGHL) women’s luncheon.  The event was held at the Westhampton Country Club on Sunday, October 2nd.  The weather was absolutely beautiful, warm and sunny, perfect for an Autumn lunch in the Hamptons.  We were seated at the “media table” which was beautifully decorated with Fall colored roses and a tall colorful tree.  Each place setting had a little bag of chocolates on the plate and each chair had a gift bag filled with goodies from the various sponsors of the luncheon.

During the cocktail hour, many guests participated in the Chinese auction while we spent time talking to our new friends at the media table and photographed the IGHL committee members.  Mimosas, belinnis, martinis, and glasses of chardonnay were brought around by the waitstaff along with hors d’oeuvres like shrimp cocktail, raspberry and brie filled pastries, and Asian style dumplings.

Next, hostess Ann Liguori welcomed all the women (and a few men in attendance!) and thanked us all for supporting IGHL.  She then introduced IGHL Senior Director of Human Resources Dori Geier and IGHL CFO Mary Beth Maag who also thanked everyone for their support.  They then introduced the CEO Walter Stockton who spoke briefly about the program’s mission before lunch was served.

Lunch consisted of a really delicious bowl of butternut squash soup with dollops of creme fraiche and toasted squash seeds in the center.  Periodically during the meal, auction winners were announced.  As raffle ticket numbers were called out, cheers would erupt from the winners’ tables which was fun to hear!  The entree came out next which was an arugula salad accompanied with a choice of grilled chicken, shrimp, or filet mignon.  We both had the filet mignon and it was really yummy and tender!

After lunch, Ann Liguori again took to the microphone to announce the beginning of the Cross Golf USA Apparel fashion show.  This was the first year at the IGHL luncheon for the Cross Golf USA apparel to be shown.  Soon a group of men, women, and children began walking around the tables in the brightly colored new line of golf clothes.  Ann had invited us to photograph this part of the event so we happily started snapping away as the models displayed look after look.  Among the models was Ann’s significant other Scott Vallary, Cross Golf Brand Manager Diana McCarty, and minor league golfer Louis de Kerillis.

Coffee, tea, and dessert consisting of peaches foster served in a big goblet and gourmet chocolate truffles was served toward the end of the Cross Golf fashion show.  More auction winners were announced and then the second fashion show began featuring clothes provided by Renee’s of Mattituck.  Everything from casual wear to formal wear for the Fall was modeled by men, women, and children.

Overall we had a really wonderful time at the luncheon.  It was nice being a guest at one of these Hamptons events for a change even though we still enjoyed shooting the fashion show parts!
